State Senator James Skoufis held his annual Cornwall Senior Picnic, one of four senior lunches he hosts throughout Orange County each September. The event is funded with a grant from State Office of the Aging, the Town of Cornwall and Town of New Windsor Recreation Departments. These groups worked for the second year in a row to create a fun event for seniors living in our community and the surrounding area. Assembly Member Chris Eachus, Supervisor Josh Wojehowski, County Legislator Virginia Scott, Council Members Mary Heed, Wynn Gold, Rohksha Michael-Razi and Deputy Mayor Dave Carnright were in attendance and addressed the seniors. This year’s Cornwall gathering was held outdoors at Munger Cottage, and it turned into exactly the kind of afternoon you hope for in our town. Good food, good music, good company, and plenty of neighbors catching up with neighbors.
Brothers BBQ handled the food, and our seniors handled the eating. And let me tell you, they did not mess around. The brisket and potato salad were clear favorites while leaving just scraps for the servers!
Along with lunch and live music, there were plenty of community resource booths where seniors could learn about programs, services, and resources available to them. It was a great opportunity to connect, ask questions, and find out what’s happening in our community.
But the sweetest part of the afternoon was seeing one of our own get the recognition she so deserves.
Our own Phylis Murphy was presented with a proclamation from Senator Skoufis.
If you know Phylis, you know she is a force of nature. She has spent years working with our seniors, helping people, showing up, getting things done, and generally making sure our community stays connected. Phylis is one of those people who seems to know everyone, knows what’s going on, and somehow always finds a way to help. She is truly loved by our community, and it was wonderful to see her recognized for all she has done for Cornwall’s seniors.
So, congratulations to Phylis, and a big thank-you to Senator Skoufis for bringing everyone together once again.
It was a great afternoon in Cornwall. We celebrated our seniors, recognized someone who has given so much to our community, enjoyed some terrific music, and, most importantly, made sure not a single piece of brisket was left behind.
