You Probably Don’t Want to Get Electrocuted

A message from the Department of Public Works

Dear Cornwall Residents,

Many of you may have noticed the emergency response activity a few weeks ago after a tree came down and took several utility poles and the power lines with it. When the lines hit the ground, they sparked intense heat that caused part of the asphalt to melt and harden into glass. To turn the aggregate and silica into glass means the temperature was well over 3,000 degrees Farenheit. It was a powerful reminder that downed lines are not just an inconvenince, they are a serious hazard to anyone nearby.

Downed Power Lines are Dangerous

  • You cannot tell if a wire is live just by looking at it.
  • Electricity can travel through the ground, creating a “danger zone” around the line.
  • Contact with a live wire or surrounding area can cause severe injury or death.

If you encounter Downed Wires…

  • Stay at least 30 feet away from any fallen line.
  • Do not attempt to move it or drive over it.
  • Call 911 or your local utility company immediately.
  • Warn others to stay clear until professionals arrive.

We’re grateful no one was hurt during this incident, and thankful for the first responders and utility workers who handled the situation quickly and professionally. Let’s continue to look out for each other and take these reminders seriously. A little caution can make a big difference in keeping our neighborhoods safe.

Thank you.
