Why Can’t We Skate on the Pond?

Even though the Winter has ended, this is a question we get all the time. So, let’s talk about it.

We hear you. Many of us really miss those magical winter days—lacing up skates, gliding across the pond, rosy cheeks, and hot chocolate waiting at home. So why can’t we do that anymore?

This pond isn’t just a pond—it’s a retention pond. That means it’s designed to collect stormwater runoff from nearby developments. Along with that water comes sediment (tiny bits of soil, sand, and organic material).

That sediment changes how the pond behaves in Winter:

Sediment retains heat more than clean water, slowing ice formation.

  • Rain and snowmelt bring in slightly warmer water that keeps circulating.
  • Ice no longer freezes evenly or solidly from top to bottom.
  • Surface ice may appear safe but can be dangerously thin in spots.
  • The Town’s insurance does not cover pond ice skating.
  • Special coverage would require costly specialty insurance.
  • Skating would also require a paid, trained on-site monitor.

A temporary rink is another option the town is exploring.
Believe us—we miss those days too ❤️
But between changing conditions, safety concerns, and insurance requirements, unfortunately, it’s not as simple as it once was.
