Curie Culvert and Retaining Wall

Infrastructure is the backbone of our community, but it’s often invisible until it fails.

The recent reconstruction of the Curie Street culvert and retaining wall was a critical emergency response to a structural failure that could no longer be ignored. By addressing this now, we have replaced a dangerous liability with a modern, reinforced asset built to protect Curie Street for decades to come. Failure to repair the culvert would have led to road closure and a more expensive remediation process in the future. The town’s engineering firm recommended we do this work to ensure public safety and to retain our insurance.

Repairing this site was required at this time to ensure:

  • Public Safety: preventing a sudden collapse onto pedestrians or vehicles.
  • Property Protection: avoiding a massive landslide that would have destroyed the road.
  • Flood Control: keeping the culvert clear to prevent localized flooding and erosion.

BEFORE:
Initial assessment showing severe concrete spalling, exposed reinforcement (rebar), and significant structural bowing.

AFTER:
Completed reconstruction of the Curie Street retaining wall, featuring modern drainage integration and reinforced structural integrity.
